The Dachshund, often affectionately called the “wiener dog,” is a small, elongated breed originally bred for hunting, particularly to dig out burrowing animals like badgers. They have a distinctive long body, short legs, and a bold, confident personality. Dachshunds were first developed in Germany around the 15th century, and their name literally means “badger dog” in German (“Dachs” meaning badger and “hund” meaning dog). Despite their small size, they have a brave and stubborn temperament, often displaying a surprising level of independence and courage. There are three coat types—smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired—which gives the breed a bit of variety in appearance.

Dachshunds are known for being loyal, affectionate companions, often forming strong bonds with their families. They can be a bit feisty and are sometimes known to be hard to train due to their independent streak, but with consistent positive reinforcement, they do well. Though they make excellent pets in a variety of living situations, from apartments to houses, they do need regular exercise to prevent them from becoming overweight, as their long backs can be prone to injury. Despite their size, they are often fearless and have a big personality, making them a popular breed among dog lovers who appreciate their quirky charm.
